Springfield. Model 1842. Cal. 69. SN: None. Manufactured 1852, Antique. Muzzle loading rifle. 42'' round barrel, Walnut stock appears original with multiple scratches, scrapes & contusions throughout from age/ handling, toe of stock about 1/8'' worn below buttplate. Several cracks along the left side where barrel meets wood and below that. The barrel is in the white, with rust speckling throughout. There are dings/clamping marks & scratches around the breech plug end of the barrel. Some spots of light pitting along wood/metal edges. Eagle head, not visible, P & V stamped on barrel. Eagle & ''US'' & SPRINGFIELD 1852'' stamped on right lockplate. Lightly rusted buttplate with ''U S'' stamped at top. Trigger guard, 2 barrel bands, nose cap & ramrod are silvery steel with light rust speckling. No rear sight were on this model. The front sight is a small pinched blade on steel noseband. Smooth bore has light rust coating over all. Hammer & spring action are all strong & mechanically sound. Comes with triangular socket bayonet that is mostly bright silver with rust speckling overall. Stamped '' N US'' at the base & ''58'' on socket. Last US smoothbore musket produced, first model made with percussion lock. Very likely used in the American Civil War.
