Smith Model Carbine, .50 Cal., MFG. 1850's, SN: 8486, Breech-loading Single Shot Percussion Rifle, 20 5/8' Octagon to round barrel. this example is in high all around configuration. It has small ''JH'' stamped in the wood on the bottom of the forearm. The original oil finished stock is excellent & solid, With most of the original finish remaining, some small chipping at the toe near buttplate. There are two clear inspection cartouches on left side at wrist. The stock has la few light scratches & handling marks, but remains in excellent condition. The case-hardened receiver displays clear case-colors. The original blue finish on barrel remains at 70% with some areas of thinning, Left side of frame marked ''SMITH'S PATENT./JUNE 23, 1857'' & ''ADDRESS/POULTNEY & TRIMBLE/ BALTIMORE U.S.A..'' The left side also has a saddle ring bar & ring present in excellent condition. Bore is excellent, bright with crisp rifling present. The barrel has a fine blade front sight on steel base & a flip up ladder notched rear sight. Carbine style metal buttplate, with small ''W'' stamped at bottom. Overall excellent condition. The Smith carbine was a rifled, breech loading .50 caliber weapon used primarily by Union cavalry early in the war. Some 30,000 were issued to Union troops. A typical breech loading carbine, it was opened for loading by depressing a latch forward of the trigger to release the barrel. The barrel then pivots downward on the frame to a right angle so the ammunition may be loaded. If it helps to visualize the process, the angle was nearly twice as great as the average break open shotgun of the time. The overall length of the carbine was 42 inches, with a barrel length of nearly 22 inches. It weighed approximately 7.5 pounds. The Smith carbine was the fourth most popular carbine used during the Civil War. It was later surpassed by the Sharps, the Spencer and the Henry. The primary reason for this is ammunition. The Smith used special ammunition housed in a tube made of India rubber. This contained the cartridge when fired and prevented flareback. The carbine could be fired using loose powder cartridges, but the resulting flareback could be hazardous to the firers eyes and face. Not long after the invention of the carbine, Smith & Wesson and Henry created self-contained metallic ammunition. This ammunition, unusable in the Smith led to the development of the repeating carbines that surpassed it later in the war. This is a rare rifle, in high & original collectible condition. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 1000 to 3000
