U.S Springfield, Model 1898 sporterized, CAL: 30-40 KRAG, MFG: 1900, SN: 271789, Bolt Action Rifle, 30'' round barrel. The modified, sanded & re-finished straight grip wood stock is in good condition, with finger groove forend it. Stock carries a number of finish flaws & several small nicks & dings. Cartouche on the left side at the wrist w/ date of 1902, additional Circle-P armory proof stamp behind trigger guard w/ two letters unreadable. Receiver is marked ''Model 1898'' in front of U.S. Springfield Armory and SN on left side. The metal blue finish on the barrel appears to have been reblued showing 70% blue. Bore is good, worn a bit, but has defined rifling. Rear sight is adjustable buckhorn rear with an elevator. Front sight is pinned blade in large metal base The buttstock on this gun has a trapdoor steel butt plate, the 3 piece cleaning rod is in place, no oiler present. Front and rear sling swivels present. This was the first U.S. smokeless service rifle until replaced by the 1903 Springfield. Rifle has a unique bolt action mechanism. The magazine can be opened to accept cartridges, and when closed, will feed the rounds up into the action. This allows for fast and easy loading, which was an appreciated feature at the time.
