German Mauser Model GEW 88 Commission Rifle CAL: 7.9 X 57. MFG: 1890, SN: 7540. German made bolt action, 29 1/2'' barrel. Original straight grip walnut stock is dark from age/wear, has a 2 1/2'' crack at the recoil reinforcement bolt & is covered w/ scratches/dings throughout Military style metal butt plate worn thin, some dents with dark brown patina. Barrel retaining about 20% bluing with more wear around muzzle, some pitting along the stock barrel line. Receiver is about 10 % with scattered rust throughout. Receiver ring very worn only visible marks ''S'' the '' R'' remains of a name where manufactured ? & faint manufacture date 1890. serial number & ''GEW 88'' on left side of receiver. Rear sight is adjustable ladder with graduation markings from 5 to 20. Front sight is windage adjustable inverted V. Bore is in very good condition, bright with sharp rifling. Mechanical function is good. Matching SN on barrel & receiver, bolt is non-matching SN, magazine floorplate is matching, front floorplate screw will not seat fully. Sling swivels present. Comes with metal handled bayonet. The Gewehr 88 has been the subject of controversy among gun experts for years. Because the rifle was loaded with a clip resembling that of the Mannlicher and based on his patents, it is often mistakenly referred to as the Mannlicher or as the Mauser-Mannlicher. Its official designation was German Infantry Model 1888 but it is often listed in Germany as Mauser and Commission. Nice vintage German mauser. Antique No FFL Req. - Value: 300 to 600
