German Mauser Model GEW 88 Commission Rifle CAL: 7.9 X 57. MFG: 1892, SN: 1967. German made bolt action, 29 1/2'' barrel. Original straight grip walnut stock is dark from age/wear & is covered w/ scratches/dings throughout. Military style metal butt plate is thin, dark brown rust patina stampings that are legible: ''** BP'' G over 2 ''L'' . Barrel retaining about 50% bluing. Receiver is in white with scattered rust throughout. Receiver rings marks small '' z'' over ''S'' Crown over ''SPANDAU 1892' & 3 proof marks. Serial # & 'GEW 88'' on left side of receiver. Rear sight base present rest of rear sight missing.. Front sight is windage adjustable inverted V. Bore is in very good condition, bright with sharp rifling. . Matching SN on barrel & receiver, bolt is non-matching SN, magazine floorplate is non - matching.. Matching serial number on stock below swivel base. Front sling swivels present rear swivel base without swivel. The Gewehr 88 has been the subject of controversy among gun experts for years. Because the rifle was loaded with a clip resembling that of the Mannlicher and based on his patents, it is often mistakenly referred to as the Mannlicher or as the Mauser-Mannlicher. Its official designation was German Infantry Model 1888 but it is often listed in Germany as Mauser and Commission. Cleaning rod present. Nice vintage German mauser. Mechanical function is good.
