E. Remington & Sons, Model 1885 Remington-Lee Military Rifle, CAL: 45/70, MFG: late 1880's, Antique, SN:22949, Bolt Action Rifle, 32 1/2'' Round barrel. The is the fourth rifle in the collection from Captain Selden Allen Day. This early bolt-action design was first patented in November 1878, as marked of this rifle's receiver, by JAMES PARIS LEE. This is the same Lee who later became famous for his huge contribution to the British Lee-Metford and Lee-Enfield series of rifles of WW1 & WW2. Using the then U.S. standard caliber of ammunition, the .45-70 round, this bolt action magazine rifle was revolutionary at the time. 750 32 1/2'' barreled Remington Lee rifles were delivered on September 1884 to the U.S. Army for trials. U.S. Army inspector DFC inspected & stamped the rifles. However it was only initially accepted by the U.S. Navy in 1885. It was sold in a quantity of just 500 units to New Zealand in 1887, but in 1892 it was passed over by the U.S. Military again in favor of the M-1892 Krag Rifle in 30-40 Caliber. This rifle carries the ''U.S.'' & ''VP'' stamped on the top of the barrel & inspector ''DFC'' stamp on the left side of the barrel. It is marked ''E. Remington & Sons, Ilion, NY, USA, Sole Manufacturers and Agents'' on the left upper portion of the receiver & ''Patented Nov 4th.1879'' on the left side of the receiver. The rifle the full military length walnut stock, with two barrel bands. The stock is excellent, with very few handling marks or contusions to the original finish. The original bright metal blue finish on the barrel & receiver rates 90%, with a larger percentage of loss on the trigger guard & Lee-Diss box magazine. Bore is excellent & bright. The rifle carries the original military sights. Carries sling loops & stacking loop. Original cleaning rod stored in forend & under barrel. Smooth metal buttplate. It is possible that S.A. Day would have had access to surplus military rifles during his service in the military & as a competitive shooter for the military. This appears to be one of those surplus weapons, which remains in outstanding original condition. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 2500 to 5000
