Description

RARE Winchester, Model 1866 Musket, Third Variation 1866, First Musket Variation, CAL: 44, MFG: 1870, SN: 41950, Lever Action Rifle, Distinctive 27'' barrel, 24'' magazine tub. 17'' extended forearm. Model 1866 was produced in three forms for the mass market, carbine, rifle, & the musket. Muskets were not produced until the production was into the third variation of the 1866. The musket made up only 15,000 of the 170101 guns produced, less than 9% of total production, thereby making it by far the scarcest. These were made specifically for military & militia contracts, featuring the longer barrel, which was the doctrine of the time, as well as a higher magazine capacity of 17 rounds of .44 Henry. This example is one of the early production muskets. Because most 1866 muskets saw heavy use by the military in frontier battles out west, most did not survive & those that have are typically in well used & rough condition. The original straight grip wood stock & & musket length forearm are good & solid, having both been fairly heavily sanded & reoiled. There a 6'' & 2'' crack at the forend tip, along with several remaining contusions, scrapes & scratches. The metal steel finish on barrel, mag & other components shows areas pitting & scarring. The metal appears to have had some additional finish added giving it a dark gray tone, with some brown patina. The loading gate retains the large majority of its original blued finish. The brass receiver has toned to a nice mustard patina. Bore is good, with areas of scarring & cleaned rust pitting amongst strong rifling. The barrel address shows wear, but much of it is still visible. The serial number is stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the trigger. The barrel holds the early musket pattern rear ladder sight & an iron block front sight which serves as a mount for a socket bayonet. The lug the third barrel band carries a very rare brass handled saber bayonet & the even rarer original leather scabbard with brass trimmings. Both original sling swivels are in place as well. Buttstock carries a brass sliding trapdoor carbine style buttplate. This is a solid example of a fairly rare 1866 Musket rifle, complete with the ultra rare bayonet & scabbard. A wonderful collectible. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 5000 to 10000
