Description

BUFFALO BULL'S Springfield armory, Model: 1866 Trapdoor, Cal: 50-70, MFG: 1866-68, S/N: N/A, Breach loading single shot, 22'' barrel. This rifle Belonged to Buffalo Bull, Buffalo Bull was born in 1830, was sometimes called Last Bull or Heslusluta. He was a minor war chief of the Minneconjou Sioux. He grew up with Lame Deer, His brother-friend and was part of the Wakpokinyan Band & lame Deer's chief lieutenant & war chief. Lame Deer & Buffalo Bull were both members of an 1868 non-treaty faction. In the attached Authenticating letter with this rifle written by Wendell Grangaard of The Guns of History, Inc., he says, From the government allotment in 1875, I believe Buffalo Bull obtained one of the first early Winchester Model 1873 rifles in the new 44-40 cartridge, with a round barrel. Buffalo Bull removed the serial number on his new Winchester for lemita (my possession). Through a wakan (holy man), he used togia to write both his names on the rifle and tell the winter count of the battle of Greasy Grass & rosebud. I believe he sent some weapons home with Flying By & Fast Bull, including an 1851 colt percussion 36 Cal Revolver S/N 107381, his 1873 Winchester Rifle & an American Arms Co. Derringer. I have no information where Buffalo Bull may have obtained this 1866 Springfield converted rifle, but it has the same togia markings as the weapons listed above., with the letter are photos where Wendell Grangaard outlines where Buffalo Bull had written his name in togia on this rifle, the markings are on the left side of the stock by the trigger, & buttplate, & on right side by top of comb & buttplate. The rifle has a military, straight wrist wood stock is that is in very good condition, but has been cut down, has light dings, dents, scratches, & wear from use/age, has custom brass button work by buttplate & foregrip. The metal has toned to a even gun metal gray with spots of cleaned pitting. Top of breech block is marked, ''1866'' & and a eagle head, left side of receiver is marked with a eagle head, lock plate is marked ''1864'', US eagle, ''U.S.'', ''SPRINGFIELD''. Bore is good, bright with roughness/pitting, blade front sight with a three position, U-notch/aperture rear sight. Metal buttplate marked ''US'' with light wear.. The rifle was originally a full length military 1866 trapdoor rifle which was the second iteration of the Allin designed breech loading conversion of the 1863 Springfield rifle, this rifle was likely a battlefield pickup from previous fight because these rifles was used in many fights with his people & in the areas his people lived, rifle was likely cut down by some of his people or a trusted gunsmith, rifle comes with authenticating letter & photos from Wendell Grangaard.* Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 1500 to 6000
