J.M. Marlin Ballard Target rifle, Model No. 5 Pacific Rifle, Cal. not marked, likely 40-70 Sharps. Consigner indicates he was told it was a 40-70 Sharps Everlasting Straight. MFG circa 1876 -1883, Antique, SN: 6459 on receiver & barrel. Single shot lever action rifle. 30'' octagon barrel. J.M. Marlin started manufacturing the Ballard rifle in 1875, it remained in production until about 1890. The straight stock/forearm appear original & are in fair condition. Buttstock is slightly loose to receiver & has a 3'' hairline crack on each of side emanating from receiver. There are chips in bottom of stock at receiver, more smaller hairline cracks & a gouge on right wrist. Forearm has several repaired cracks on both sides near tip, has added wood filler & has added coat of finish. Most of barrel is covered with cleaned rust pit scaring & a light gray/brown patina. Receiver has been scrubbed, with rust pit scarring & gray/ brown spotting. Double set-triggers, Extra heavy wrought frame with two-line frame markings:''JM Marlin New Haven Conn U.S.A./Ballard's Patent Nov 5, 1861''. Missing sight elevator on Rocky Mountain rear sight, RM blade front sight. Ring shaped lever has rust surface pitting. Crescent buttplate with rust/pitting, has a nice fit to buttstock. Wood cleaning rod located in original fasteners under barrel. Bore is good with visible rifling. Screws show slot wear. Action is tight. Weight is 10.3 Lbs. These guns typically saw hard use on the frontier, this one looks like it did its fair share of honest work. Ballard rifles are still quite popular, evidenced by they're still making parts for this rifle at its factory in Cody Wy. No FFL Req. - Value: 2000 to 8000
