Description

EXCEPTIONAL & RARE Remington ''Special Police'', Model 81 Woodmaster, marked .35 Rem. Cal., MFG. 1942, SN: 18809, Semi-Auto Rifle, 22'' barrel, In 1938 Remington was gearing up to bring out a new line of modified firearms dubbed ''Special Police'' aimed specifically for sale to the law enforcement community. The Model 11 & 31 shotguns were included in this lineup & after work with Peace Officers Equipment Co to secure the extended magazines, the Model 81 was as well. The Model 81 Police rifle was a powerhouse fit for close range work just like its Model 8 predecessor. With a 15 round magazine, the officer didn't have to worry about immediate reloading nor lacking fire superiority! The ''Special Police'' rifle, introduced in early 1940, was essentially a continuation of the POE modified Model 8's, but with larger marketing hopes. As stated, the primary market for the ''Special Police'' was to law enforcement agencies & penitentiaries. L.A. County Sheriffs Dept. purchased 199 Special Police Model 81s between 1941-1942. This particular rifle being number ''36'' in that order & is thus factory marked ''Police Gun- Property of Sheriff Dept. No. 36 Los Angeles County''. Condition of these Police rifles varies widely, but most are well used or reconditioned. This particular rifle is highest condition original police rifle ever encountered by a prominent Remington 8 & 81 collector during a 40+ year search & collecting of these rifles. This rifle was sent to the Sheriff's Dept. at L.A. County & was mostly likely never issued or saw duty. The walnut stock & beavertail forearm are nearly mint excellent, retaining all of the original factory finish. The original factory blue is fully retained at 99% on all metal surfaces, including the matching serial numbered magazine (which is often not the case). Bore is mint. Fitted with the factory open sights, Incomplete records & collectors' educated estimates put total production between 300 to 350 of these rifles by Remington. This is an extremely rare rifle & probably in the highest collectible original condition. If you ever wanted one, this is your chance to own the best one in existence. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 8500 to 12000
