Carbines like this were issued by Cavalry troops during the Civil War. The weapon measures 39'' overall & the shorter length made it easier to handle on horseback. This rifle has the housing for Sharps patented pellet priming mechanism incorporated in the 1863 model rifles & carbines. The walnut buttstock is excellent, with a military oil finish with numerous small scratches, scrapes & contusions. There are cartouches above & below the saddle ring bar ''D.F.C.'', the principle sub inspector, David F. Clark., hard to make out the other cartouche. Plain, no-patch box, 1865 buttstock. The forearm matches the buttstock, with aged appearance & is in good condition, with light scratches/blemishes appropriate for age & use. The barrel & other metal surfaces carry a dark grey/brown patina, with some light pitting near the muzzle. Stamp on barrel behind rear sight is a worn ''NEW MODEL''. The R.S. Lawrence adjustable up to 800 yards rear ladder sight is stamped ''R.S. LAWRENCE/PATENTED FEB 15TH 1859''. Left side of receiver is stamped: ''C. SHARPS PAT/SEPT. 12TH 1842''. Right side of receiver stamped: ''R.S. LAWRENCE PAT./APRIL 12TH 1858 & C. SHARPS PAT/OCT. 5TH 1852''. Barrel has stamp on right side: ''F 10 CAV'', indicating this rifle issued to the 10th Cavalry. The serial number is located on top of the receiver tang. Rifling is very good & bore is shiny with very little scaring. Single Iron barrel band is present & matches the barrel surface. Bottom tang carries the lever locking lug. Single trigger. A complete, unique & very good condition, battle used carbine, attributed to 10th Cavalry! Antique, no FFL Req. - Value: 5000 to 8000
