Rogers & Spencer, Utica NY, .44 percussion, Mfg. 1863, SN. 5XX, Single-action, six-shot, percussion revolver, Ilion, N.Y., 7 1/2'' octagon barrel, These revolvers were perhaps the finest pistol design to emerge from the Civil War era being essentially an improvement of the Freeman & Pentigill revolver. Rogers & Spencers were produced from 1863-65, allowing some revolvers to actually entered the fray during the Civil War. This particular gun is an early production with a 3-digit serial number. Most publications seem to indicate 5,000 of the total production of 5,800 were purchased by the U.S. Government in 1865, too late to be issued...from there this group remained unissued until they were eventually sold as surplus to Bannermans of NY around 1901. This being one of those surplused Government pistols. The matching serial number is located on the bottom of the grip strap, the cylinder, the underside of the barrel, the loading lever, cylinder & the left side of the frame. Ordnance ''B'' sub-inspection marks are stamped on the barrel, frame, loading lever, cylinder, trigger guard, & grips. Cone front & frame notch rear sights, blue finish with casehardened hammer & loading lever. Fitted with smooth walnut grips with a sharp boxed ''RPB'' cartouche on the lower left side & each panel is numbered to the gun on the inside. Condition is Excellent. The revolver retains 85% of the bright original blue finish, most of wear is showing on the cylinder, with edge wear, patches of wear & areas where blue has flaked. The grips are excellent, with thinning finish wear & minor chipping to bottom edge. The cartouche on the left panel remains sharp. The markings are sharp. The action is excellent. This is an exceptionally high conditioned Civil War Rodgers & Spencer revolver worthy of the finest Civil War collection. Antique No FFL Req. - Value: 6000 to 12000
