Description

Whitney Safety Firearms Company, Hammerless Double Grade 1, CAL: 12 GA, MFG: 1889 (1887-1895), Antique, SN: 444, Break Action SxS Shotgun, 30'' Twisted Steel barrels. The right side of the receiver is marked ''WHITNEY SAFETY FIREARMS CO'' & the right side of the frame is marked ''FLORENCE MASS PAT SEPT 2 1884''. The full SN can be found on the floor plate, right barrel flat & forend. The ''Grade 1'' stamp is above the SN on the floor plate. The checkered round knob wood stocks are excellent, having been lightly sanded & refinished. There are smoothed contusions, scratches, nicks, dings, a large disc inlay or dowel on both sides of the stock & an added layer of finish was applied at one time. The twisted steel barrels are a mix of metal gray & brown patina, with a prominent twist pattern. The case-hardened receiver has mostly worn to metal gray & thin brown patina, with faint case-colors remaining in protected areas. Bores are very good with visible striations & patches of roughness. The matted rib holds a single front bead. Stock has a Whitney checkered plastic buttplate. These guns are fairly rare with only appx 1,100 produced. This example is a first year production. This is an informational quote from the late Joseph T. Vorisek's book ''The Breech Loading Shotgun In America 1865 to 1940''. Quote: WHITNEY SAFETY FIRE ARMS CO. Gunmaker located in Florence South Carolina from 1887 to 1895. The only shotgun made by this firm & in fact the only gun made by them was a hammerless double that used a pistol grip lever as a safety. The action was a squeeze grip safety that created tension on the hammer springs allowing the gun to be fired. The best estimate is that the firm made about 1,100 shotguns in the time it was in business. After the firm closed in 1894 there were three attempts to restart it.one by a group of businessmen in Pennsylvania that came to naught. The same thing happened on the second attempt by a New Whitney Arms Company organized in Hartford,CT and a third by a New Whitney Arms Co organized in New Jersey. Whitney guns were made in three grades, Grade 1: Twist, laminated or damascus barrels. Grade 2 damascus barrels and line engraving and Grade 3 Fine damascus and more engraving. The guns came in 10 gauge with 26,28, 30 and 32 inch barrels, 12 gauge with 26, 28 and 30 inch barrels and 16 and 20 gauges with 24 and 28 inch barrels. Approximate serial number ranges of guns made; 1889-201 to 500. 1890-501 to 800 and 1891-801 +.''. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 300 to 900
