Bonehill of Birmingham, Winner's Trophy, 12 ga., MFG Antique, SN: 4807, Double barrel break action shotgun, 2 3/4'' Chamber, 30'' barrels with a solid matted rib & single bead. The damascus steel barrels carry a beautiful pattern C. G. Bonehill was a gun maker located in Birmingham, England in the period 1851-circa 1914 & produced a variety of guns including air rifles, single barrel & double barrel rifles & shotguns. This shotgun carries a 3'' silver oval plate on the left side of the stock, which is 4 line stamped: ''WINNER'', ''1ST'', ''JULY 4TH 1890'', ''NO. PLATTE NEBR.''. Apparently the 1st place trophy for a shooting competition held on that day. North Platte Nebraska was the location of ranches owned by the famous Wild West Show partners Buffalo Bill Cody & Pawnee Bill. It is likely the shoot was organized by Buffalo Bill on his ''Scout's Rest Ranch, the location of his first Wild West Show known as Old Glory Blowout held July 4, 1882. At the end of the 1911 show season, Buffalo Bill sold three Thousand acres of the ranch to partner Pawnee Bill for $100,000.
The checkered & round pistol grip stocks are very good & solid. Most of the original finish has worn away on the forend, as the checkering has worn smooth & with numerous small handling marks & contusions. The stock maybe a possible replacement or at least looks to have been lightly sanded, refinished & checkering re-cut as it appears in better condition than the forend. The metal surfaces have worn mostly silver with a thin spotty layer of brown patina. Nice accent hand engraving. Bores are very good. Stock carries a black hard rubber buttplate which is slightly ill fit & has a worn spot along one edge. The action is tight. LOP 13 1/2''. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 1500
