Exceptionally Rare, Pre-production Prototype WWI era ''Remington-UMC'' Model 1911 contract pistol. This pistol is nearly identical to the top pistol on page 216 of the book: ''US Military Automatic Pistols'' by Scott Meadows. The difference is this pistol was a previous example before the ''UNITED STATES PROPERTY'' stamp was applied. This scarce pistol does not have any of the usual U.S. Army contract proof or acceptance marks, & NO SERIAL NUMBER. The left side of the slide has the full factory two block, three line slide markings with the circled ''REMINGTON-UMC'' logo in the middle. It has a two-line ''MODEL OF 1911/U.S. ARMY CALIBER 45'' marking on the right slide. It is fitted with an Army contract type all blued barrel that is marked with only a letter ''P'' on top of the chamber area. Clearly, a pre-production/prototype pistol of some type. These Remington-UMC pistol were produced in their own serial number block of ''1 to 21,676'' for the U.S. Military & were manufactured at the Bridgeport, Connecticut factory using their own drawings that did not conform to either Colts or the U.S. Government. Consequently most of these pistols were disposed of after WWI due to the non-conforming parts. Certainly this is a rare & very unusual, & probably a one of a kind, early Remington-UMC pre-production/prototype Model 1911 pistol. Factory blue brushed finish is 98%. Factory checkered walnut grips are very crisp. Has correct two-toned magazine. Noted in the aforementioned book, there were only 22 of these prototype pistols that existed & backed up by Remington records. Highly collectable!!! FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 5000 to 50000
