Description

Remington Arms UMC Co. Inc., Model 1911 U.S Army, CAL: 45, MFG: 1918 (First Year Production), SN: 6978, Semi Auto Pistol, 5'' barrel. In December of 1917, Remington-UMC was given a contract for 150,000 M1911 pistols. Later the quantity was revised to 500,000, but Remington-UMC only produced 21,677 guns (SN 1-21677) before WWI ended & the contract was cancelled. The pistols are of high quality, but the blued finish was not. Most examples have a poor finish, such as this one. The left side of the frame, above the mag release is the ''E.E.C.'' ordnance mark. The ordnance mark is from Edmund E. Chapman, Major, Ordnance Reserve Corps, & is only present on the Remington-UMC manufactured pistols. The left side of the slide is marked with a three line patent date, the Rem-UMC trademark logo & a three line manufacturer stamp. The left side of the frame on the flat is marked ''UNITED STATES PROPERTY''. The right side of the slide is marked in two lines ''MODEL OF 1911 U.S ARMY CALIBER .45'' & the right side of the frame is marked with the SN. The checkered wood grips are excellent & solid. The checkering is beginning to wear smooth at the bottom of both grips. The metal finish is a mix of remaining blue in protected areas, gun metal gray & light brown patina, with intermittent rust speckling. The safety lever & grip safety appear to be reblued or replacement parts. Bore is excellent, appears grainy. Standard notch & blade sights. Non-factory Wilson Combat magazine. An early example of a scarce REM-UMC 1911. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 1500 to 3000
