Japanese army murata type Katana. Overall length in scabbard is 38 inches, brown painted steel saya with lots of scratches through the paint accumulated over the years. The blade is 26 3/8 '' in length, WWII era 1940's, in good condition with full length hi, light surface rust and a few light dings around the monouchi area. There are arsenal stamps on fuchi. One brass screw mekugi that holds the cast aluminum handle on nakago, that is painted to resemble the fabric wrap on a Samurai sword. The tsuba is plain iron, standard for murata type sword. Fuchi/kashira are standard cast parts with chrysanthemum motifs as well as in the cast menuki. The habaki is a single piece brass with scratching decorations. These swords were manufactured using modern machine shop materials & methods, identical in appearance to Samurai blades, however made from bar stock and oil tempered instead of water tempered as true Samurai blades were. Another distinguishing feature of this type of sword is a serial number stamped on the blade near the tsuba & on the mouth of the saya, these serial numbers very rarely match, in this case they do, which will add to the value of this piece. Virtually all of these swords were nicely made and are quite effective as weapons. - Value: 1000 to 2000
