J. Stevens A & T Co. Model 51 (Schuetzen Rifle). Cal: 32-40. MFG:1896 to 1916 SN:4008. Single shot lever action rifle. 31 3/4'' Octagon round heavy barrel. The checkered walnut stocks are original & excellent, with lovely tiger striped grain. The Schnabel tip forearm has a flat carved area where a palm rest was likely mounted. The swiss style buttstock has a raised cheek & nickel plated Schuetzen buttplate. The finish appears original & in very good condition, with some light dings, scratches & staining. This J. Stevens version is also known as a Schuetzen Rifle because of upgraded features such as double set triggers, higher grade walnut stock with large check rest, wooden insert in trigger guard action lever & heavy Schuetzen-style buttplate. Barrel retains 85% bluing with some wear on the flats that are toning to a brown patina. Barrel marked, ''J. STEVENS A & T CO. CHICOPEE FALLS. MASS USA. APR. 17.94''. The case-hardened receiver retains faded case-coloring under the factory Ricciolo style engraving. Engraved with a bird dog on left & Elk on the right. Serial numbers on tang & barrel match. Front sight is very nice 1'' long globe with fine post. Rear of barrel mounted with adjustable J. W. Fecker scope mounts & J.W. Fecker 20 power scope, with very fine crosshairs in clear glass & recoil spring. Receiver tang mounted with period Vernier adjustable tang sight with graduations & 6 size adjustable aperture. Bore is excellent condition. Action is tight & functions well. Weighs 14.44 pounds. This is a rare & very difficult to find model in such great original condition. The factory engraving & upgraded period scope/sights package makes this a fantastic collectible rifle. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 5000 to 10000
