Description

Sharps Borchardt. Model 1878 Long Range No. 1 Rifle, Cal: .45-70 Government. SN: 20886. Lever Falling Block Single Shot Rifle, 32'' Heavy round barrel, No markings on barrel except matching serial number under forearm. The original deluxe checkered & capped pistol grip straight grain American walnut stocks are very good & solid. The stock once carried a provision, that has since been wood inlay filled on the upper comb, where the tang sight could be moved from the rear tang to the stock provision. The ebony tipped forearm carries a tightly repaired 3'' crack at the tip & a small filled chip against the receiver. The stocks have an added layer of finish over the original finish, with just a few light surface scratches/dings & some flattening to the checkering along the bottom of forend. The barrel retains 70% of original blue, which is toning gray & thinning, with some marks & wear about the muzzle. The case-hardened action, receiver, lever display smokey outlines of case with protected areas still retaining some light case-coloring. Some of the screws show slot wear. The rear tang carries the correct long range Vernier sight with case-coloring on base, 1'' eyecup with single aperture & marked on both sides of elevator 0 to 3 with increments. No provision for scope. Barrel carries a blank filled rear dovetail & an exceptionally nice factory spirit level, adjustable front globe sight, with calibration markings & crosshairs. Receiver carries the original hard rubber panels. Matching serial numbers throughout on receiver, barrel, forearm & forearm retaining wedge. Checkered trigger. Safety behind trigger which is unique to this rifle, as it appears to be a second trigger. It is engaged when the lever is opened & must be slid rearward before the trigger can be pulled. The buttplate appears original with sharp checkering present & circle with ''S R Co'' interlaced. This rifle was designed by Hugo Borchardt & uses a hammerless striker rather than a hammer & firing pin like the previous Sharps. It was the last of the Sharps single shot rifles, of which approximately 21,000 were produced in Military, Sporting & Express configurations. The Military version being the only model with 32'' round barrels, which is what this rifle carries. This gun was revolutionary for its time with its use of coil rather than flat springs. The Sharps Borchardt is admired for its strength & accuracy, reputedly to be one of the strongest actioned rifles built at its time. Bore is very good, bright, with distinct lands & grooves. Tight action, crisp trigger. A unique & very collectible rifle. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 4000 to 8000
