Description

Factory Letter Sharps Model 1874 Sporting Rifle. Cal.:44. SN: 156455. Lever Falling Block Single Shot Rifle, 26'' Heavy octagon barrel. Barrel is stamped on top flat ''FREUND & BRO'' then marked ''OLD RELIABLE'' then ''SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT. CONN.'' & then ''CALIBRE 44'' just ahead of the breech. On the bottom flat under forearm are matching serial numbers, ''6'' then 14 over 16 then ''A+''. The straight grain American walnut forearm appears to be a Meacham style replacement & carries the # 8218. Both forearm & buttstock have a few light surface scratches & dings after a light refinish. Forend has a tight repaired hairline grain crack that runs the length of the right side of forearm. The rear sight is flip-up ladder marked ''R.S. LAWRENCE/PATENTED/FEB 15TH 1859''. Front sight has folding combination globe with fine post/bead. The barrel retains little of its original blue, toning to a light brown patina, with several small dings along the flats. The factory letter indicates this rifle shipped with 32'' barrel. This barrel is serial numbered to gun, however, its been shortened to 26''. The action, receiver & lever retain faded case-coloring. Adjustable double set triggers. The buttplate is original checkered military with faint case-colors remaining. Vintage sling in swivels. Bore is very good, with distinct lands & grooves. Sharps manufactured approximately 6,400 Model 1874 Sporting rifles between 1871 & 1880. They were popular with market hunters in the West & were well known for their ability to take down bison at long ranges & also popular with long range target shooters. The double set triggers helped make them incredibly accurate. Sharps were manufactured in some of the most powerful black powder cartridges ever made. The action functions correctly & is solid with a very crisp triggers. The factory letter dated August 25, 1975 reads: Your Sharps Rifle serial number 156455 has been located in the original Sharps Rifle Company Records of the ''Old Reliable'' Bridgeport, Conn. Plant. This gun was shipped August 18, 1876 to Ben Kittridge and Company, of Cincinnati, Ohio. It is listed as a model 1874 Sporting Octagon Rifle. It had a full thirty two inch octagonal barrel of 44 caliber. It had also double set triggers, open sights & an oiled stock. The exact weight was eleven lbs & eight oz. The price to Kittridge was forty two dollars. I trust the above factory date to be of value to you. Sincerely, R. L. Moore, Jr., M. D. The Old Reliable became so popular that, no pun intended, because it was probably the most reliable gun on the frontier. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 4000 to 8000
