Sharps Cavalry Carbine. Model 1859 New Model, CAL: .52, percussion MFG: 1859 to 1862. SN: 78913, Lever Falling Block Single Shot Rifle, 22'' Round barrel marked ''NEW'', with the rest of ''MODEL 1859'' worn away. Carbines like this were issued by Cavalry troops during the Civil War. The lockplate has been modified or replace. The weapon measures 39'' overall & the shorter length made it easier to handle on horseback. 6 groove barrel. The walnut stocks are in very good condition, but appears to be replacements or professionally sanded & refinished, with some small scratches, scrapes & contusions. There are no cartouches above & below the saddle ring bar. No patch box in the buttstock. The barrel & other metal surfaces carry a dark grey/brown patina, with some light pitting near the muzzle. The right side plate, hammer & nipple look like possible replacements. The adjustable rear ladder sight is adjustable up to 800, & is stamped ''R.S. LAWRENCE/PATENTED FEB 15TH 1859''. The elevator does not lock in the upright position. The front sight is heavy blade with vertical silver band inletted. Left side of receiver is stamped: ''C. SHARPS PAT/SEPT. 12TH 1848''. Right side of receiver stamped: ''C. SHARPS PAT/OCT. 5TH 1852''. The serial number is located on top of the receiver tang. Bore is good shape, dark & with scaring, but visible rifling. Single iron barrel band finish matches the barrel surface. Bottom tang carries the lever locking lug. Single trigger. Standard military style metal buttplate with dark grey patina. Action is strong & mechanically sound. A nice, battle worn Civil war carbine. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 1000 to 3000
