Spencer Repeating Carbine. Model 1860. Cal. .50, Antique MFG 1863 to 1865. SN: 46482, Lever Action repeating 7 Shot Rifle, 22'' Round barrel with no visible markings showing. The weapon measures 39'' overall. This Carbine was originally a .52 caliber then Springfield arsenal converted to .50-70 CF metallic cartridge with a relined 3 groove barrel. The walnut stocks are dark & appear original in fair condition, with scratches, scrapes & contusions. There is a 5 inch horizontal crack completely through the buttstock from the buttplate forward. There are no cartouches above & below the missing saddle ring, bar & retaining screws. The barrel & other metal surfaces carry a dark grey/brown patina w/dark surface rust throughout. The saddle ring plate, right side-plate lower tang, buttplate & hammer all appear to be replacements. The lever has seen some adjustment to shape. Some case-colors remain on the lower receiver tang & buttplate. The rear sight is not marked, but is an adjustable up to 800 yards rear ladder sight. The front sight is a worn carbine sight with silver inletted blade. The serial number is located on top of the receiver. Bore is dark plumb colored with distinctly visible rifling & light rust in grooves. Single iron barrel band matches the barrel surface. Single trigger. Standard military style metal buttplate with access to tubular magazine. Action is strong & mechanically sound. The Spencer rifle employed a spring-loaded seven-shot tubular magazine that was located in the buttstock & a lever action which when operated, ejected a spent cartridge & chambered a fresh one. By the end of the Civil war more than 144,000 spencer rifles & carbines had been manufactured with over two-thirds of those purchased by the U.S. government. Unfortunately on this one, the makers markings & parts of the receiver are no longer visible. These are a hard to find piece of American history. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 1000 to 3000
