J. P. Sauer & Sohn, Stalker Rifle, Cal. 32-40 (7.6 mm). MFG. 1914-1930. SN: 209348, Underlever Break-Action Single-Shot Rifle, 25 1/2'' round barrel. J. P. Sauer & Sohn is one of Germany's oldest & most prestigious firearms manufacturers. Its history goes back to 1751 when Lorenz Sauer first founded his firm. Joined in 1840 by Johann Sauer to form J. P. Sauer & Sohn. The firm made all manner of sporting rifles, continuing under the same Sauer family until the end of WWII. This slim & trim rifle has a simple robust action & some of the finest craftsmanship that 20th Century Germany had to offer. The original checkered pistol grip walnut stocks are solid & excellent. The straight comb stock carries a cheek, while the forend is a smooth slender Schnabel style. The stocks carry the original finish, with few minor handling marks. The forend does have a couple of 1'' repaired cracks & a small 1/2'' chip of wood missing on the belly where the forend meet the receiver. The stock also has a couple of small chips on the bottom front corners of the wrist where the stock meets the receiver. The original metal blue finish on the barrel, lever & other small parts is retained at 85%, with some speckled loss. The case-hardened receiver displays vivid case-colors. Stock is mounted with a black checkered hard rubber buttplate & a sling swivel mounted in the belly. There is another swivel mounted to the barrel forward of the forend. The barrel has a fixed rear sight with a flip-up secondary leaf & a small standard front sight. Crafted with double set triggers. Excellent bore. This would make a fine addition to a European sporting rifle collection & would still make a fine stalking rifle nearly a century after it was made. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 1000 to 2000
