SPECTACULAR FACTORY ENGRAVED Marlin Model 1881, marked 32-40 Cal., MFG: 1886, SN: 12783, Lever Action Rifle, 24'' Octagon barrel, Full mag. This very rare & special ordered, deluxe rifle carries fabulous hand engraving typical of the era of the 1881 rifles. Conrad F. Ulrich, Jr. had been engraving Ballard's for John Marlin for years & as a result of his fine work, was hired full time to engrave for Marlin. He did almost all of the engraved firearms for Marlin during the period of 1881 to 1910. This rifle is certainly representative of his work with the stippled background on the fern-like scrolls & game scene. Most Model 1881's were engraved before Marlin standardized patterns, but typically these 1881's display a simple border, scroll & a game scene engraving within a circle. The left side of the receiver carries a bear scene, while the left side displays a buck deer. This particular example was also upgraded with gold plating over the engraved receiver & a nickel silver plated lever. The factory, ''B'' style deluxe checkered, ''S'' shaped pistol grip wood stocks are excellent & solid. The wood is upgraded to a wavy grain. The original finish remains excellent with few finish level scratches & some minor contusions. The original metal blue finish on barrel & mag is retained at 85% with most of the loss due to age wear. The gold plated receiver is thinning on the edges, with some dulling to a haze. The crescent metal buttplate, hammer, sliding bolt, lower tang & forearm cap are all case-hardened & display strong case-colors. Barrel carries an original adjustable rear sight & a Rocky Mountain front blade sight. Action remains tight & smooth. Bore is very good, with strong rifling. This is a wonderful example of a rare special order deluxe rifle, which remains in original condition & is highly collectible. No FFL Req. - Value: 8000 to 15000
