FANTASTIC FACTORY ENGRAVED Marlin, Model 1881, marked 40 Cal., MFG. 1885, SN: 10352, Lever Action Rifle, Special order 30'' Extra Heavy, Extra Long Octagon barrel. Full mag., This very rare & special ordered, deluxe rifle carries beautiful hand engraving typical of the era of the 1881 rifles. Likely done by Conrad F. Ulrich, Jr. who was the full time engraver for Marlin & engraved most of the firearms between 1881 to 1910. This rifle is certainly representative of his work with the stippled background on the fern-like scrolls & game scene. Most Model 1881's were engraved before Marlin standardized patterns, but typically these 1881's display a simple border, scroll & a game scene engraving within a circle. The left side of the receiver on this rifle carries a buck deer, while the right side displays a bear scene, The factory, ''B'' style deluxe checkered, wood stocks are very good & solid. The deluxe wood carries a rippled grain. The stocks carry the original finish which has worn thin & some additional oils. The stock has a short grain crack at the toe & a 1/4'' chip at the point of the upper comb. There are numerous small finish level scratches, a full length forend scratch & some minor contusions, as well as some flattening of the checkering. The original metal finishes have all worn to a satin gun metal gray with some spotty areas of brown patina. Barrel carries an original adjustable rear sight & a half moon front blade sight. Action remains tight & smooth. Bore is very good, with strong rifling. Crescent metal buttplate. This is a finely engraved special order deluxe rifle, with rare features remaining in original collectors condition. No FFL Req. - Value: 4000 to 7000
