Remington, No. 1 Sporting Rolling Block Rifle, Cal. .45-70, MFG: 1873-88 S/N: 1405, 26'' Full octagon heavy barrel. The No. 1 heavy single shot Rolling Block Sporting Rifle was made in a variety of calibers, with the largest being used by buffalo hunters & frontiersmen in the West. The .45-70 caliber was the standard U.S. Military cartridge introduced in 1873 & was very popular in the big Remington Rolling Block & Sharps rifles of that time period. It was especially popular because ammunition could always be procured from frontier military forts & outposts. This is a very rare rifle with approximately 10,000 No. 1 rifles produced & far fewer made in 45-70 caliber. The original straight grip wood stocks are very good & solid. There is an inlayed metal tip to the forearm. Most of the original finish on the rifle has worn from years of use, with added protective oils which give the stocks a flat hand rubbed oil appearance. The stocks display numerous small handling marks or contusions consistent with typical use. The original metal blue finish has toned to an even brown patina. l. The case-hardened receiver has worn to gun metal gray with coverage of a plum/brown patina. Rifle is mounted with an updated early adjustable rear sight & a correct period front sight. The rifle is SN stamped 4405 on the lower tang, on the underside of the barrel under the forearm & under the buttplate. The caliber marking on the underside of the barrel ahead of the forearm has been removed, a possible indication the bore & caliber may have been upgraded. Bore is excellent, with a couple spots of haze. This rifle is a very nice example of a rare sporting rolling block rifle which remains in nice condition. Antique No FFL Req. - Value: 1000 to 3000
