U.S. Springfield. Model 1873. Cal. 45-70, Antique SN: 400115. Mfg: 1888. Breech loading trapdoor rifle. 32'' round barrel, with visible markings remaining near breech end. The original one-piece walnut stock very good, with multiple light scratches, scrapes & contusions throughout. The original finish is very good with some added oil. The barrel carries an even dark brown patina. Side lock carries light case-colors & has very crisp winged eagle, ''U.S. SPRINGFIELD'' stampings. Buttplate with ''U S'' stamped at top. Trigger guard, two barrel bands, nose cap & cleaning rod are iron with blue & some brown patina. The rear sight is a 1884 Buffington sight with graduations marked on sides from 2 to 20, appears in very good functioning condition. The front sight is a carbine style. Bore is very good with strong rifling, but some roughness. Single trigger. Front barrel band having correct stacking swivel. Hammer, spring & trapdoor action are all strong & mechanically sound. Comes with the correct bayonet with 80% blue & spotty rust, in the correct metal scabbard with leather belt loop. Later adjustable leather sling. Very nice overall example.
