U.S. Springfield 1881 Forager Trapdoor shotgun, MFG Antique Circa 1881-1885, Cal. 20 Ga, SN:295, Trapdoor breech loading single shot shotgun. 26'' round barrel. The black walnut stock with slim forend were made from Civil War musket stocks cut down to 28''. This straight grip one-piece stock has been nicely refinished long ago & has a mellowing patina. There are some scratches & dings on underside of forearm, large gouge in wood around forward stock screw. Light cartouche in block above trigger on left side. Barrel & receiver carry light grey/brown patina, with remains of the original bluing or case-coloring. Barrel has remains of a lacquer finish that likely covered the entire barrel as an attempt to protect from rust. ''US'' & ''2'' Stamp on top of buttplate. Front brass bead sight. Receiver was modified/enlarged to accept 20-gauge shell. Lock plate carries heavy cleaned pitting & has two-line stamping ''U.S./SPRINGFIELD'' with eagle motif in front of the hammer. Bore is fair with rust spots & some pitting. One of only 1,376 pieces produced. This model was made from civil war surplus parts was not a converted rifle. These were issued on the frontier, 2 per company to augment rations with small game. The last known Forager shotguns were issued to troops in Alaska in 1906-1910. Standard shot was a #6 shot in brass shells. A rare complete & mechanically tight example.* No FFL Req - Value: 1000 to 2000
