U.S. Springfield. Model 1884. Cal. 45-70, Antique Manufactured 1886. SN: 638715. Breech loading trapdoor rifle. 32 '' round barrel, with sharp visible markings ''V, P, eagle head, P & A'' remaining near breech end. Parts of this rifle appear to have been professionally restored. The original one-piece walnut stock has been lightly sanded & nicely refinished, with some light scratches & dings throughout. There are no cartouches visible on the left side of stock. The outer barrel has retains 70% bluing over dark patina. Side lock contains no visible case-colors & has been blued over pitted & sanded obscuring the winged eagle, & part of the ''U.S. SPRINGFIELD stampings. Buttplate with ''U S'' stamped at top. Trigger guard, two barrel bands, nose cap & cleaning rod all iron with brown/grey patina appear original. The rear sight is 1884 Buffington sight with graduations marked on left/right side from 2 to 20 & is in very good functioning condition. Breech block has been re-case-colored or is a newly replaced part in almost new condition. The front sight is heavy base with fine blade. Bore remains shiny with roughness, but crisp rifling present. Single trigger. Front barrel band having correct stacking swivel. Old leather sling, but not as issued to this rifle. Metal pistol grip appears original in very good condition. Hammer, spring & trapdoor action are strong & mechanically sound. Rifle presents well & is a nice piece of American history. No FFL Req. - Value: 1000 to 2000
