E. Remington & Sons. Modelo Argentino 1879 E.N., Cal 11mm, (.43 Spanish), MFG. 1879. SN: none. Single shot rolling block rifle, 36'' round barrel. Barrel markings on top flat of 2.25'' octagonal Knox form at breech end:''MODELO ARGENTINO. 1879 E.N''. & ''B'' stamped in the left barrel flat just ahead of the receiver/barrel junction. The upper receiver tang has faint stamping: ''E. REMINGTON & SONS ILION N.Y. U.S.A. / PAT. MAY 3D 1864 MAY 7TH JUNE 11TH NOV 12TH DEC 24TH 1872/ DEC 31ST SEPT 9TH 1873 JAN 12TH MARCH 18TH. The smooth straight grip buttstock is a possible replacement, in very good condition with oil finish. The top & bottom tangs have an open hole from missing buttstock retaining screw. Stock is still firmly fitted to upper & lower receiver tangs. Forestock appears to be the original, with many dings, scratches & contusions. Finish appears original with added oils. Three barrel bands. Cleaning rod present in forestock. Sling swivels. The barrel has a smooth brown patina throughout, while the case-hardened receiver & trigger guard have also toned brown with very little case-color remaining. The barrel has a sabre bayonet lug on the right side. The rear sight is an adjustable elevator with graduation marks from 5 to 11. Among firearm historian, it is said this sight is one of the finest sights ever fitted to a military rolling block during the period. Strongly influenced by German developments & is a near duplicate of the Austrian Werndl sight Carbine style front sight. Bore is very good. Stock carries the original metal buttplate. The action is crisp & mechanically sound. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 1000
