Description

Val Kern of Nurnberg. Model: Drilling 3 barrel Cal. 8m/m & 16 gauge. Action: Underlever break open double barrel, side by side shotgun, with rifle barrel below. MFG: 1910-1920. S/N: 10 on receiver. The original checkered & capped pistol grip walnut stocks are very good, with original finish. There are couple of 1'' hairline cracks at the shoulder of the wrist with a couple of small chips at the top of upper tang. The stocks have light scratches & minor contusions. The cheeked stock has a highly engraved trapdoor storage compartment in the upper comb for additional ammo storage. The forestock has fine checkering, a metal inlaid tip & engraving on the release lever metal parts. Hard plastic shotgun style buttplate with stags embossed in oval over letters EB entwined. Pistol grip has carved horn cap. The German silver receiver, top/bottom tangs, action/release & barrel rib have outstanding fine engraving that include multiple Stags in forest scenes surrounded by leaf scrolling. There are two rabbits engraved on the top of the receiver, one on each side of the flip-up aperture receiver sight. Top of barrel. Marked: ''VAL KERN NURNBERG'' & with double eagle ''KRUPP STAHL'' crests, (high quality steel from Krupp family in Germany) stamped on the sides on both shotgun barrels. Barrels have standard German proofs on underside. Heavy rib between shotgun barrels carry mounting provisions for scope with rear mount having locking lever on right side. Receiver marked with German proof stamps. & serial number. Shotgun barrels are Krupp Steel with 50% bluing remaining and some grey patina beginning to show. Front sight is blade style. The folding leaf rear sight automatically pops-up when the rifle switch is selected. Single slim blade front sight. Single extractor for all barrels. All three bores are very good. Rifle barrel's lands/grooves are strong. Barrel to receiver fit is excellent with no play & function is excellent. Duel triggers & sliding bar safety. Sling swivels in buttstock & on rifle barrel. This beautiful drilling was built using a unique & very reliable sliding bar design. This drilling was likely custom built for someone of some wealth & affluence in the early 1900s. LOP: 14 in, DAC: 1 in, DAH: 2 in. Weight: 6.45 pounds. An extremely fine firearm, with two digit serial number, & meant for high end European gun collectors. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 3000 to 6000
