Description

RARE 101 RANCH Colt, Model 1878 Double Barrel, 10 ga. Mfg 1883, S/N: 16130. 32'' Barrels. This is a nice example of a scarce Colt 1878 double barrel hammer shotgun. Colt manufactured only 22,700 of these shotguns in 12 & 10 gauge from 1878-89. The right side of the buttstock of this shotgun has a silver plaque stating ''101 Ranch 1894'', which is what makes this an even rarer & exceptional shotgun. The 101 Ranch was a 110,000 acre cattle ranch in the Indian Territory of Oklahoma before statehood. The ranch was owned by the Miller brothers & the next door neighbor was Major Gordon W. Lillie, who performed as Pawnee Bill. He motivated the Millers to produce a Wild West Show of their own. The Millers made their transition from putting on local shows to the national scene in 1907, when they performed at the Jamestown Exposition in Virginia. Later in 1907, the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch Wild West Show began the tour circuit in Brighton Beach, New York. Joe Miller, the eldest son, was an exceptional equestrian & star performer. Over the course of the show's history, its cast included Lillian Smith, Bill Picket, Bessie Herberg, Bee Ho Gray, Tom Mix, Jack Hoxie, Mexican Joe, Ross Hettan, Wenona the sharp shooting Indian girl & of course an elderly Buffalo Bill.

CONDITION: The Damascus pattern barrels carry a single brass bead & are marked with the one line address on top of the smooth concave solid rib, with dolls head extension. Has 3'' chambers & extractors. The walnut forearm is heavily worn, with flattened checkering, chipped edges & worn ebony insert. The multi-point checkered round knob pistol grip stock has a rawhide frontier repair at the wrist. The stock is tight to the receiver. The stocks carry an added layer of finish, with a silver medallion in the stock. The metal parts all carry a gun metal gray with thin brown patina. Each side lock is marked ''Colt's Pt. F.A. Mfg. Co.'' & the matching SN appears on the inside of frame, barrel, buttplate & forearm. Bores are good, with roughness. LOP 14'' to front trigger. Right side firing pin is missing. This is a rare & historical piece of western memorabilia. No FFL Req - Value: 1000 to 3000
