Description

EXQUISITE James Purdey & Sons Black Powder Express Rifle. 577-500 Cal., MFG. 1873, S/N: 8916. 29'' Double barrel side lock. Comes with James Purdy & sons, LTD. ''Two Hundred Years Of Excellence'' book by Donald Dallas & 'The Double Gun & Single Shot Journal', Volume Twenty-One, Issue 4, Winter 2010 which features this exact gun on pages 131 to 139. This rifle, No. 8916, was completed in 1873 for The Earl of Durham George Fredrick D'Arcy Lambton. The rifle was made in lever with Jones lock-up. The nearly full checkered fore-end has a sliding bolt or wedge-style catch & a lovely engraved steel finial at the tip. Fine bead front sight & a multi-leaf express style rear sight with 1 standing & 3 folding leaves in graduated yardage up to 400 yards. Two of the leaves retain their inlayed gold vertical lines. The locks have non-rebounding hammers with stalking safeties in front. It has Enfield-style rifling & the bores are excellent. The barrels & non-matted rib are made of fantastic patterned Damascus steel which carry a beautiful milk chocolate brown patina. Top of barrels is marked ''J. Purdey, 314-1/2 Oxford Street, London''. The action & locks still retain some of the red, gold & blues of the case-color. The locks, action, underlever & for-end furniture are covered with ornate engraving. Likely engraved by James Lucas, Purdey's Master engraver at that time. The buttstock has lovely wavy dark walnut grain with apropos checkering. The left side of stock carries a finely undercut carved cheekrest. There are two small crack repairs at the bottom of wrist which run from the bottom tang up to the side lock panels. The repair does not distract & the stock appears solid & strong. Barrel & stock carry original eyelets. It has an original steel shotgun buttplate with checkering & engraved at top ''Charge/3 3/4 Drs. No. 6 Coarse Powder/Curtis & Harvey''. This is an extraordinary handcrafted Purdy double rifle of the finest quality. No FFL Req - Value: 40000 to 80000
