Description

NICKEL PLATED Colt US CAVALRY Army Single Action Revolver, 45 Colt Cal., MFG 1874, SN: 13416, Documented Ainsworth Inspected pistol. This revolver is called a BUY-BACK revolver amongst collectors & has a Kopec letter which indicates that this was one of 2307 revolvers originally issued by the Ordnance Department to the State of Virginia, Virginia at that time was in dire need of funds, so they decided to sell these newly issued pistols to surplus arms sellers & even some back to Colt. It is believed that the dealer was Herman Boker & Co. & consisted of pistols originally shipped on July 9th & 28th consisting of pistols in the 12000 & 13000 SN range like this pistol. While many Colt experts believe that Colt sent the buy-back revolvers to the Adams Nickel Plating & Mfg. Co. in South Windham, Connecticut, for nickel plating to distinguish them from government owned revolvers & sold the pistols on the open market, Kopecs states he believes It was actually Herman Boker who sent them to Adams. He believes some were also bought back by Colt, nickeled & fitted with Ivory grips. These pistols are often referred to as ''BUY-BACKS'' by collectors. A good representation of these ''buy-back'' serial numbers are shown on page 21 of the book ''Colt Cavalry & Artillery Revolver'' where this revolver #13416 is also cited. This revolver has the early production Single Action Army features & markings which include the Single line barrel address, first style ejector assembly with barrel boss, bullseye ejector rod head, cylinder with small stops and guides, cavalry hammer with elongated bordered knurling on the spur, early script barrel address & frame with Colt two-line/two-date patent markings. The small ''A'' Ainsworth Ordnance sub-inspection marks are visible on the underside of barrel, trigger guard, cylinder & back strap. A small ''U.S.'' property mark is stamped on the left side of the frame. ''P'' proof marks are visible on the underside of the barrel & the side of the cylinder. The loading gate is stamped with the assembly number ''781''. The full serial number ''13416'' is visible on the underside of the frame, trigger guard, back strap & cylinder. The walnut grip has the faint remains of the Ainsworth Cartouche on the lower left grip panel, The Kopec letter confirms this revolver & in his opinion this revolver is 100% correct in all respects & is worth of being in the finest Colt Collection, Wood grips are solid & original with small chip to bottom left corner with average wear, worn nickel finish with dark spots, Bore is very good with strong rifling. Fine historical piece.* Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 6000 to 10000
