Description

RARE SPECIAL ORDER Winchester Model 1873 ''Trapper Carbine'' Full Nickel SRC, CAL: .44, MFG: 1882, SN:96746, Lever Action Carbine, Special Order 17'' round barrel. Full mag. This is a transitional Carbine from Second Model to Third Model. Reversed rear sight, dust cover with serrated edges, single upper tang screw & script SN on the lower receiver tang. This is a very rare Trapper with full magazine, normally they have half or ''Button Magazine.'' The Letter from the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming confirms this Carbine as 17'' barrel. While they do not mention the nickel finish, a 17'' Trapper carbine with SN 96744A (just two guns prior) is nickeled & the characteristic might have been left off the records for this carbine. Every indication leads one to believe it is correctly factory nickeled. Many of these 17'' nickeled trappers were ordered by the Mexican government & this carbine trapper falls within that SN range. The stock & forearm are the original varnished straight grain American walnut. The stocks are very good & solid. They carry the original finish with some added protective oils. There are numerous small contusions & blemishes consistent with heavy use, but overall appearance is very good. The carbine has a nickel-plated finish on all exterior & interior components. The barrel retains 60% of the original factory nickel finish, receiver 40% & mag 10%. In areas of lose there is a browning patina & rust pitting. The carbine has the second style barrel band mounted ahead of the rear sight & screw-retained magazine cap. The barrel has a block style front sight & reverse mounted 1873 carbine ladder sight. The staple mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The hammer spur has course bordered knurling. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: ''WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING- ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860.'' in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped with the ''Type 2' marking: ''MODEL. 1873.''. The barrel & cartridge elevator, correctly, lack caliber markings. Rifle has a smooth, tight & mechanically sound action. Bore is surprisingly very good & bright. Stock carries original nickeled carbine trapdoor buttplate, which includes the three piece jointed steel cleaning rod. Come with Cody Factory Winchester Letter. In 2017 a full nickeled 1873 SRC sold at auction in excess of $80,000. While this SRC carbine does not have the same lever of condition remaining, its rarity as a 17'' trapper is high sought after & special. This is a rare & very good example of a Special Order Winchester Model 1873 SRC Trapper with full nickel-plated finish.* Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 7000 to 12500
