Description

EXTRAORDINARY & EXCEEDINGLY RARE Winchester, Model 1894 CASE-COLORED DELUXE, .38-55 Cal., MFG. 1895 ANTIQUE, SN: 10888, Lever Action Rifle, 26'' Full Octagon barrel & special ordered 2/3 magazine. This is a fabulous, rare & documented rifle having numerous Special Order features confirmed by the accompanying Winchester Factory Records Letter. According to factory records, only 155 case-hardened 1894 rifles were produced. Far fewer was the number of Deluxe Rifles at only 16 & the rarity mounts when adding the additional special order features. The original XXX/XXXX deluxe checkered & capped pistol grip wood stocks are excellent & solid. Ordered with the hand rubbed ''Oil Finish'', which along with the hand checkering remain excellent. The stocks have fabulous scalloped & feathered grain, with very few light handling scuffs. The metal blue finish is 98% on barrel, thinning a bit on mag to 95%. As a special order deluxe rifle, the metal parts would have all been hand polished to a finer lever, which is evidenced by the finish on the case-hardened receiver, lever, hammer & forend cap. As the case-colors have faded to smokey outlines, with colors appearing in more protected areas, the receiver has a shiny silver finish below. This is different from most standard Winchester case-hardened rifle where the receiver has a dull gun metal gray once the case-colors fade. The loading port, bolt & lever panel on underside of receiver all carry 90% original blue. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line Winchester Arms Company, New Haven address legend ahead of the rear sight & ''38-55'' caliber marking at the breech. Barrel address is strong. The SN is stamped on forward belly of receiver. The left side of the lower tang under the wood is stamped ''2427 SOF RB''. ''SOF'' for Special Order Features, which the consignor believes refers to better than XXX wood, & ''RB'' indicating rubber buttplate, which the letter correctly identifies & the rifle indeed carries a shotgun hard rubber buttplate. There is a small missing chip at toe of the buttplate which could be easily repaired by numerous individuals in the industry. The assembly number ''2427'' is repeated on the stock inlet. Bore is excellent, bright with strong lands & grooves. Barrel fitted with elevation adjusting Buckhorn rear sight & standard brass bead front sight. Tight smooth lever & action. Plain trigger. According to the factory letter, the rifle was received in the warehouse on October 29, 1895 & was shipped 7 days later on November 6th. When factoring in the capped pistol grip, shotgun buttplate & especially the 2/3rds mag, which is very uncommon, it is likely that this rifle goes from one of just 16 case-hardened deluxe 1894's, to possibly the only one configured in this manner or certainly only of only a few. Outstanding eye appeal on this exceedingly rare & highly collectible, case-colored deluxe, Special Order 1894 rifle. Comes with a the Cody Winchester Records Factory Letter confirming the described features.* ANTIQUE, No FFL Req. - Value: 25000 to 45000
