AMAZING & RARE Spencer Sporting Rifle, CAL: 56-46, MFG: 1865, SN: 257, RARE early 3 digit SN. Lever Action Falling Block Rifle. 26'' round barrel. The Spencer was one of the most widely used & popular Civil War firearms. This particular rifle however was one that was sub-contracted by Burnside Rifle Company & 1 of only 3,500 that were not U.S. Government purchased. The top of the receiver is marked SPENCER REPEATING/ RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS/ PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860.''. The SN is marked on the top left rear of the receiver next to the hammer. The sides of the receiver, hammer, lever, lock & buttplate are case-hardened & display vivid & beautiful case-colors, which is exceedingly rare & un-matched for this model. The bottom of the barrel under the forearm is SN marked ''257'' in front of the rear screw lug & ''4'', & ''33'' behind the lug near the breech. The bottom of the forearm is also marked with ''33''. The original factory barrel blue is outstanding with full coverage rating at least 95%. Ftted with factory blade front sight, folding notch/aperture rear ladder sight graduated to 800 yards & a factory mounted tang sight installed on the rear of the receiver. The SN which is normally mounted on the rear tang, was factory shifted to the left to accommidate the factory original tang. The sights carry a large amount of factory high polish nitre blue. Combination trigger guard & lever operates the unique Spencer action, extracting the spent casing on the down stroke & chambering a fresh round from the tube magazine in the buttstock on the upstroke. Mounted with a smooth forearm with pewter forend cap & straight grip stock. The stocks are excellent, displaying original finish & only minor contusions, nicks & dings. The stocks on this example also display excellent tiger stripped grain, which is unusual for these rifles. Buttstock carries a smooth metal buttplate with loading chamber, which still displays the smokey outlines of case-colors. Bore is excellent. This is an exceptional example of a very rare, antique rifle with fantastic original collectors condition remaining. A fabulous opportunity to own one of the best in existance.* NO FFL Req. - Value: 10000 to 15000
