Rare J. Stevens, Model 425 High Power, marked Cal. 25 REM, MFG. 1911-17, SN: 1932, Lever Action Rifle, 22'' Round barrel, 2/3 length mag., The 425 was designed by John Redfield & represented the J. Stevens Arms & Tool Companies entry into the centerfire arena. Although some sources erroneously claim there were 26,000 of these rifles produced, there were but a fraction. More commonly accepted amongst knowledgeable collectors & factory historians is that less than 5,000 were produced & possible less than 1,000. The model was only produced or cataloged from 1911-17 & was serialized with at least one other Stevens model produced during this period, thus accounting for the confusion surrounding serialization. Peter Zobian, a prominent 425 collector has concluded from his research & exhaustive search, that Brophy's information in the Marlin book is most likely correct in that Steven (Savage) made less than 1,000 of these rifles. As of 2010, his research had only turned up 117 examples, serialized between 1,021 & 5,594 in the four calibers, .25, .30, .32 & .35 REM. Remember other models also fall into that same serialization range. Regardless of which production figure is correct, this model is one of the rarest of the lever models produced in the glory era of other Winchester, Marlin & Savage lever rifles. This rifle fires the rare .25 Rem rimless centerfire cartridge. The original walnut stocks are very good & solid, with most of the original finish worn off & numerous scuffs, scratches &small contusions. There are light traces of initials in the stock. Stock & forearm have had some light oils added atop the original worn thin finish. Metal blue finish is 70% on barrel & mag., 60% on receiver & lever, thinning to an even gray/brown patina. Metal surfaces have some nicks, abrasions & scarring, as well as spotting or speckling to the finish. Bore is very good, with strong rifling. Has correct period front & rear sights. Factory crescent metal buttplate, Hammer spur has been repaired. A good example of this rare & collectible rifle in the rarest caliber. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 1000 to 2000
