Description

Remington Rolling Block, No. 5 Uruguayan Contract Saddle Ring Carbine, CAL: 7x57 MAUSER, MFG: 1901-1917, S/N: 2996, 20 1/2'' round barrel. This gun has been partially refinish/restored. The rifle carries the original 3 piece - buttstock, forend & half-length handguard stocks. The straight grip wood stocks are in very good, as lightly sanded in areas & refinished, with very little scratches or contusions. There some oil staining where wood meets metal around receiver & upper/lower tangs. The wood is well fitted to metal parts, with the exception of the buttplate fitting proud. The handguard has a steel nosecap. The metal blue finish on the exposed barrel appears to have restored blue, after mild buffing & cleaning as stampings are good. The case-hardened receiver has faded to gun metal gray, with light coverage of a plum/brown patina. The left side of receiver retains the saddle bar/ring, which are in good condition. One of the screws on the left side of receiver is new bright blue, not matching rest of receiver. Rifle is mounted with a ''V'' notch combination sliding elevator/ladder sight marked ''2 to 13''. The front sight is a tall inverte V blade that is dovetailed into block on the barrel. The rifle is SN stamped 2996 on the top of the barrel about 2 1/2 '' from the front sight. The caliber marking is stamped on top of the barrel ahead of the forearm. Bore is fair, dark, but with visible rifling amongst pitting. Buttplate appears original carbine style steel in good condition with a brown/rust patina. There has been about 1/4'' of wood removed around both side edges of buttpate, unknown why. Original sling swivels mounted on left side of buttstock & barrel band. The right rear of the stock is marked with a large 13 over a round cartouche with ''EJERCITO / URUGUAYO'' around the border & a ''890'' /'' A'' unit marking in the center. Rack number on left side of buttstock looks to be ''38'' - very faint. Overall, a nicely partially refinished example. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 400 to 1600
