Enfield Model 1871 Snider II, CAL: 577 Snider. MFG:1860's. SN: NONE, Single shot trapdoor rifle, 36 1/2'' round barrel. The original straight grip stock are in good condition for age. Some scratches & dings overall from age/use. Some heavier scratches on buttstock around the stamped ''R. M. ENFIELD'' cartouche, also stamped with a diamond shape & ''DC'' on right side of buttstock. The barrel & receiver in very good condition, carry a brown patina. The barrel, receiver & trapdoor are stamped w/proofmarks & star under II. Right sidelock is stamped with British crown over ''V.R.'' a smaller crown over ''1871 ENFIELD'' ''7'' Rear sight consist of two blade sights with adjustable increments from 1 to 4 on side then a flip up ladder with increments 5 to 7. Front sight is small inverted ''V'' on block. Lacquered brass trigger guard, chained nose cap & buttplate original to gun. Retains original cleaning rod. Bore is good with some light pitting & distinct, visible rifling. Action is tight & appears to functions well. Jacob Snider, an American from New York, developed this breech loading system for the P-1853 Enfield, the most prolific imported Percussion rifle in use by both the North and South during the U.S. Civil War. When the British Board of Ordnance appointed a Select Committee in 1864 the Snider system was swiftly adopted with the first breech loaders being issued in 1865 to British forces. Improved in 1867 by the use of Colonel Boxer's center fire brass bodied cartridge, the rifle was used very effectively in the Abyssinian Campaign of 1868. The system utilized a hinged breech block with an internal firing pin assembly that permitted the use of a self contained cartridge of lead bullet in cardboard, and, after 1867, brass casing. This highly efficient conversion system prolonged the active life of the P-1853 rifles up until 1871 when the Martini System was adopted. Snider rifles saw continued use throughout the Empire but were officially obsoleted by the late 1880s.
