Werndl Model 1854/67 Trapdoor Conversion, CAL: .54 RF, SN: 862, trapdoor breech loading single shot rifle, 35 '' heavy barrel, first 4 '' octagon then remainder round barrel. The very light colored straight grain American walnut lightly lacquered on full length one piece stock is in very good condition w/ some light scratches/dings. Marked on top flat w/ around eagle, '' ST68'' & ''WERNDL'' on trapdoor and breech plug. Right sidelock plate has ''862'' Various cartouches /inspectors stamps scattered on left side, buttstock & ''THSEDERL'' stamped on bottom of buttstock behind bottom tang. military style steel buttplate w/ ''6 LVD'' stamped on top. Rear sight is blade w/ flip up elevator numbered 4 to 8. Front sight is small blade on block. The barrel & other metal surfaces are age brown/grey rust patina with no visible pitting. Bore is in very good condition considering age/black powder use, clear, visible rifling w/some rust, light pitting. -The Wnzl rifle was a breech loading conversion of the M1854 & M1862 Lorenz rifle. The Austro-Hungarian Empire used the Wnzl as their service rifle until they had enough M1867 Werndl-Holub rifles to arm the military. The rifle was a lifting-block breechloader chambered for the 1433mm Wnzl rimfire cartridge. The Austrians converted a total of 70,000 Lorenz muskets to Wnzls. The Lorenz percussion rifle adopted in 1854 was conceived by Lieutenant JOSEPH LORENZ of the Austrian Army. In 1862 this rifle was revised slightly, with a different ''Enfield-Style'' lock plate, and more consistent manufacturing. In 1866 after losing the Austro/Prussian War having faced the superior Prussian Dreyse needle fire rifle the search started for new revolutionary infantry weapon. This turned out to be the 1867 WERNDL rolling block rifle personally selected by the Emperor Franz Joseph. The question remained of what to do with the vast inventory remaining of the M1854 and M1862 Lorenz rifles. This was solved with the 1867 introduction of the WNZL conversion system that turned the Lorenz muzzle loader into a 14MM metallic cartridge breech loader and 70,000 transformations were undertaken. This rifle retains original wooden muzzle plug. NO FFL Req - Value: 1000 to 2000
