Wickham Model 1830, CAL: 69, MFG: 1863-65, SN: 1861 Conversion from flintlock to percussion muzzle-loading rifle, 41 3/4'' barrel. The finish on the stock appears original with added oils darkening original finish. The stock to metal fit is excellent & the stock carries a cartouche on the left side above the trigger guard. The metal finish has toned mostly gun metal grey with spots developing a brown patina & speckled rust pitting, along with barrel bands, trigger guard & buttplate. Side plates & hammer have a rust grey/brown patina as well. Rear sight has two flip up leafs, the higher one stamped with a ''3''. Front sight is heavy inverted ''v'' blade shape that is incorporated with front barrel band that houses the steel ramrod. Ramrod appears original Tulip style. The bore is browning with some rifling still visible. Original sling swivels on front of trigger guard & middle barrel band. This model Conversion M.T. Wickham Musket had possible Confederate usage. The lockplate is dated 1830 & is marked ''US M. T. WICKHAM / PHILa 1830'' This flintlock longarm was converted percussion. The barrel is secured to the stock by three iron bands. Residing in Philadelphia, Wickham served as an inspector of contract arms and general troubleshooter at the national armory between 1811 & 1816. Wickham possessed great talent as a gunsmith. More important, he exhibited a rare ability to manage men effectively while at the same time retaining their admiration and respect. Wickham decided to enter the world of private business after the War of 1812. Upon resigning his inspectorship in 1816, he took over an existing musket contract with the United States. His rise from an obscure country workshop to a leading arms manufacturer and businessman was a truly impressive achievement. The action is still functional!
