RARE U.S. Springfield Model 1869 Cadet Rifle, CAL: .50-70 MFG: 1870, SN: 2358, Breech loading trapdoor rifle, 29 5/8'' round barrel. This is a scarce 169 Cadet model & one of just 3,422 manufactured by Springfield Armory between 1869-76. The distinctive short barrel & the lack of sling swivels help to identify it as a cadet rifle. The one-piece walnut stock appears original & in very good condition, with multiple scratches, scrapes & minor contusions throughout. It may have been lightly buffed or cleaned, with added oil or waxes. There is a ''L'' cartouche visible on the underside of stock 2'' below trigger. The right side of stock has two rack numbers ''43'' & ''76'', with another ''43'' stamped at butt end of comb next to buttplate. The barrel has a thin brown patina, with some darker patches & some fairly deep dings around the muzzle. The receiver has a darker gray patina. Top of trapdoor stamped ''1870 '', eagle head & US stamped. Left side of barrel & receiver have matching SN stamped. There is a small ''x'' stamped on the right side of barrel below the rear sight. Side lock has a very crisp winged eagle, ''U.S. SPRINGFIELD'' & ''1863'' stampings, which is correct as these guns used surplus Civil War Musket locks. Buttplate with ''US'' stamped at top. Trigger guard, two barrel bands (both with ''U'' stamps). Nose cap & cleaning rod are iron with a brown/grey patina. The rear sight is a flip-up elevator, with graduations marks from 2 to 7 & appears to be in very good, functioning condition. The front sight is a small blade on steel base. Bore is very good with good rifling & some shine, but also light areas of roughness. Single trigger. Hammer, spring & trapdoor action are all strong & mechanically sound. A rare cadet trapdoor rifle in very nice original condition. Antique, NO FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 2000
