U.S. Springfield Model 1884, CAL: 45-70, MFG: 1893. SN: 550463, Breech loading trapdoor rifle. 32 '' round barrel, with visible markings ''V, P, eagle head, P'' remaining near breech end. The one-piece walnut stock with many scratches & dings throughout. There is one very faint, partial cartouche visible on the left side of stock just above trigger. Stock has ''8'' ''NY'' , & ''469'' stamped on top of buttstock near buttplate & on right side of buttstock ''32'' and large ''STELIG''. The barrel is a light silvery/brown patina. Side lock has had case-colors fade away, with a very crisp winged eagle & ''U.S. SPRINGFIELD ''stampings. Military steel Buttplate with ''U S'' stamped at top & sliding trapdoor for cleaning kit. Brown patina overall.. Trigger guard, two barrel bands, nose cap & cleaning rod all iron with brown/grey patina. The rear sight is 1884 Buffington sight with graduations marked on left/right side from ''2 to 20'' & is in good functioning condition. The front sight is a small base with fine blade. Bore shows some rust forming, darkening, with some rifling present. Single trigger. Front barrel band has correct stacking swivel. Hammer, spring & trapdoor action are strong & mechanically sound. The rifles bottom front of the barrel is equipped with the 1884-style ramrod bayonet attachment that has straight edge and flat ears that lock the rod bayonet in place. This style is the predecessor to the Model 1888 which had wrap-around locking ears. Bayonet is a rnd steel rod with knurled section at the end with dimpled tip in very good condition having some light spotting. A nice piece of American history. NO FFL Req. - Value: 800 to 1600
