Description

Poultney & Trimble Model ''Smith's Carbine'' Saddle Ring Percussion Carbine, CAL: 50, SN: 10139, MFG: 1850 to 1860's Breech loading single shot rifle, 21 5/8'' barrel of which first 6 1/4'' is octagon, remaining 14'' round barrel, with markings on left barrel flat ''LFR'' on left side of receiver: ''SMITH'S PATENT -JUNE 23, 1857 - ''ADDRESS - POULTNEY & TRIMBLE - BALTIMORE U.S.A.'' & under the rear sight ''R''. Original straight grain American walnut stocks in very good condition with only one 1/2'' gouge on the bottom right side of the forearm & a few scattered small dings. The stocks carry the original finish, w/ a sharp oval ''JH'' cartouche on the left side of the wrist. Saddle ring bar & ring present on left side of receiver. Fitted with a flip-up ladder sight showing no graduations on the face. Front sight is silver blade set in heavy sight base. The barrel retains little of its original blue, turning to a dark brown patina & light rust speckling. The action, receiver & lever were case-hardened & have worn to a dark gun metal gray with some light rust speckling throughout. Single trigger. Original military style buttplate. Bore in very good condition, light wear with some very light pitting, more so at the breech end, lands & grooves are sharp/clear. The action & hammer functions correctly & is solid with a very crisp trigger. The Smith Carbine is a breech-loading rifle patented by Gilbert Smith on June 23, 1857 and successfully completed the military trials of the late 1850s. It was used by various cavalry units during the American Civil War. The Smith Carbine was unique in that it broke apart in the middle for loading and it used rubber cartridges which sealed the gases in the breech. Poultney & Trimble out of Baltimore was the name of the distributor for the manufacturers of these rifles. NO FFL Req - Value: 2000 to 4000
