Medieval style sword , one handed with plain metal crossgaurd appears to be iron with overall rust patina. Blade is 34 '' long. Leather wrapped wooden handle is 4 3/4 ''. Two crescent moon stamps about 10 '' from crossguard on both sides of the blade. Blade has slight bend about a foot from the tip. Leather sheath appears to be made for this sword comes with, in fair condiiton, with tip bent and some of the leather beginning to unravel. Difficult to tell if this is an original or reproduction as rust/pitting on blade & overall condition indicates some age. Medieval swords are long, wide, straight, double-edged blade with a simple cross-guard (or ''cruciform'' hilt). It might be designed for one or two-hands. The typical form was a single hand weapon used for hacking, shearing cuts and also for limited thrusting. This style developed essentially from Celtic, Germanic, Anglo-Saxon, and late Roman (the spatha) forms. The Viking and early Frankish forms (the ''spata'') are also considered to be more direct ancestors. Medieval swords can be classified (typically by hilt design) into a great many categories by curators, collectors, and military historians. The challenge of armor in the Age-of-plate, forced many blades (both single-hand and longer) to be made narrower and pointier, but also thicker and more rigid. This particular sword is on the thinner side. An interesting study piece that may or may not be original. - Value: 100 to 500
