Believed to be a ''Knights of Columbus'' sword worn by color guards & on formal occsions.
The most distinctive feature on this sword is the ''cross'' on the black-enameled grip. It also has a ''knight's-head'' on the pommel; three-point cross-guard finials; knight's-head is displayed in the center of the cross-guard. The grips are wood and painted with black enamel. These swords are very ornate in appearance & were not intended for combat. Fraternal, Lodge, or Society swords are relatively inexpensive to own & are fun to collect. There are seemingly infinite variations. This one is marked by maker '' The Henderson Ames Co. Kalamazoo, Mich. There is gold etching across most of the surface and the name '' Wilber J. Holklas'' about midway on the blade that matches the name on the scabbard. Blade is overall very good condition with some light staining toward the end, has not been sharpened. Comes with canvas cover & leather carrying bag. - Value: 50 to 200
