U.S Springfield Model 1884, CAL: 45-70, MFG: 1887, SN: 376540, Breech Loading Trapdoor Rifle, 29'' barrel with visible markings ''V, P, Eagle Head, P'' remaining near breech end. The one-piece walnut stock is very good, displaying some scratches & dings throughout. Stock has ''133'' cartouche stamped on top of buttstock near toe of buttplate. The metal finish has toned to a true gun metal grey/ light brown patina with light spotting over the entirety of the metal. The side lock was once case-colored with only the shadowing remaining. The stampings are worn, but visible. The military steel buttplate is stamped ''U.S'' on the toe. The rear sight is 1884 Buffington sight with graduations marked on left & right side from ''2 to 20'' & is in good functioning condition. The front sight is a small base with fine blade, covered by a large stationary globe sight. Bore shows some light spotting, darkening, with rifling present. Single trigger. Front barrel band has correct stacking swivel. Hammer, spring & trapdoor action are strong & mechanically sound. The rifles bottom front of the barrel is equipped with the 1884-style ramrod bayonet attachment that has straight edge and flat ears that lock the rod bayonet in place. This style is the predecessor to the Model 1888 which had wrap-around locking ears. Bayonet is a round steel rod with knurled section at the end with dimpled tip in very good condition having some light spotting. A nice piece of American history. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 600 to 1200
