Description

RARE & HISTORICAL U.S Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Rifle, with Indian Togia Markings. SN: 381143, .45 Cal, Trapdoor Single Shot Rifle, 21 1/2'' barrel. This rifle was comes with a letter from Wendell Grangaard, the President of The Guns of History, Inc., who examined the rifle, identifying & translating the Togia markings found on the stock. Wendell Grangaard is highly regarded as the leading Togia expert & author of ''Documenting the Weapons Used at the Little Bighorn''. He states as follows: ''During my examination of this rifle I discovered the name Black Bull written in Togia on the left side of the stock, along with the following message: ''Black Bull-scout-Black Bull-Hunkpapa-rode together-Crow King-Black Bull''. This is shown in illustration 1. On the right side of stalk. I found a similar Togia message: ''BlackBull-scout-Black Bull-Hunkpapa-rode together-Gall-Black Bull-Talonapin Raw Meat Neckless Band-Black Bull'', see illustration 2. On the right side forearm I found ''Black Bullscout'' written in Togia, as shown in illustration 3. Black Bull was born in 1861 to Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux parents. His father died when he was young, so Black Bull lived with his mother Good Race & sister Bring Out With Difficulty. When he became of age, Black Bull joined the same band as his father, Crow King's Talonapin Raw Meat Necklace Band. Sitting Bull's scouting unit was composed of various Hunkpapa men, which included Crow King. The scouts served for the entire Hunkpapa tribe & Gall served as the leader of the unit. Black Bull was a member of the scouting unit & during the Little Bighorn/Greasy Grass Battle, he & other scouts were in the north searching for additional soldiers. They encountered additional troops, the Walking Soldiers, which they reported to Sitting Bull later after the battle ended. Black Bull was among the Hunkpapa scouts who followed Sitting Bull into Canada. He & his family surrendered in 1881 with Gall & his band & settled on the Standing Rock Reservation.

The Rifle: The Walnut stock is well weathered & in addition to the Togia marking are numerous gouges, dings & scratches. It has a 2'' crack on top of right wrist & slivers of wood missing along the top edge of forearm. The metal components have all toned to a dark chocolate brown patina, with areas of rust pitting & abrasions. Some added finishes may have been applied to both wood & metal over the years. Bore is poor, with heavy rust pitting. The rifle is missing the rear sight & saddle ring. The rifle appears to funtion properly. The images on internet below have had the Togia marking over-traced in pen to aid with identification purposes & for the auction, however, THE GUN HAS NO PEN MARKINGS, JUST ON THE PHOTOS! The rifle comes with the authenticating letter from Wendell Grangaard, the photos illustrating the Togia markings & a copy of the book ''Documenting the Weapons Used at the Little Bighorn''. The rifle is truly a unique piece of U.S. Native American history, worthy of museum display & certainly highly collectible in private collection.* Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 3000 to 5000
