B. Kittredge & Co., Model: Frank Wesson Patent Military Carbine Cal: 44 Rimfire., MFG. 1859 -88, SN: 2277, single shot breech loading Carbine, 24'' octagonal barrel. Wood stock contains large chip 1'' at toe where wood meets buttplate & 1 1/2'' chip at the wrist where it meets upper tang. Gaps in mettle/wood fit, otherwise in relatively good condition for age & use with occasional nicks/dings throughout. The metal buttplate appears original & is missing screws to attach to stock & contains rust patina overall. The metal surfaces have a spotty aged brown patina from fairly deep rust throughout. Barrel has numerous tiny contusions, rust pitting overall & appears that the lower sling swivel has been removed and filled in with dovetailed metal patch. Rear sight appears to have been replaced with a basic fixed semi-buckhorn sight & covers part of the makers address '' F. WESSON PATENT OCT 25 1859'' & '' B. KITTREDGE & CO. CINCINNATI, O'' . Front sight appears to have been replaced with small blade in brass base. Bore is fair, dark with pitting/rust present & some visible rifling. During the Civil War, Frank Wesson supplied approximately 3,000 of these carbines to B. Kittredge & Company of Cincinnati. Kittredge then supplied 760 to Indiana, 1,366 to Kentucky, and others to Kansas and Missouri. In July 1862, Brigadier-General J. T. Boyle of Kentucky complained about Gallagher guns, calling them ''Worthless''. He stated that ''They snap often, the cartridge hangs in after firing; difficult to get the exploded cartridges out often with screw-driver; men throw them away and take musket or any other arm. They are unquestionably worthless'', Still a wonderful old & hard to find addition to a Civil war collection, with a unique action that is rough, but functioning in this rifle. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 1500
